Why Louisville homes are energy inefficient
Louisville has a lot of homes built before 2000. Pre-2000 homes typically have: single-pane or builder-grade double-pane windows, R-11 to R-19 attic insulation, no wall insulation in many cases, builder-grade HVAC, no air sealing. That means your HVAC is fighting the weather year-round, and your bills are higher than they need to be.
Upgrade 1: Attic insulation to R-49
Cost: $2K-$5K for an average Louisville home. Savings: $400-$800/year on heating/cooling. Payback: 3-5 years. R-49 is the current Louisville code minimum for new construction. If your attic has less than R-30, you are losing money every month.
Upgrade 2: Air sealing the attic
Cost: $1K-$3K. Savings: $300-$600/year. Payback: 2-5 years. Most Louisville homes have gaps around plumbing penetrations, light fixtures, electrical boxes, and the attic hatch. Sealing these with caulk and foam is one of the highest-ROI things you can do.
Upgrade 3: Replace single-pane windows
Cost: $8K-$20K for an average home. Savings: $300-$600/year. Payback: 15-25 years. Pure ROI is not great. But if your windows are drafty, rotting, or you are replacing them anyway, the efficiency comes along for free. Skip the upgrade if your windows are in good shape.
Upgrade 4: High-efficiency HVAC (16+ SEER)
Cost: $8K-$15K. Savings: $400-$900/year. Payback: 10-15 years. A 16-SEER system vs a 14-SEER system uses about 13% less energy. Combined with proper sizing and ductwork, the savings can be larger. Worth doing when your old system dies, not as a pre-emptive upgrade.
Upgrade 5: Heat pump water heater
Cost: $2K-$4K installed. Savings: $300-$500/year. Payback: 5-8 years. Heat pump water heaters use 60-70% less energy than standard electric water heaters. Louisville homes with electric water heating should consider this. Gas homes see smaller savings but it is still worth it.
Upgrade 6: Smart thermostat
Cost: $200-$400. Savings: $150-$300/year. Payback: 1-2 years. Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell — they all work. The savings come from smarter scheduling, geofencing, and learning your patterns. The cheapest upgrade with the fastest payback.
Upgrade 7: LED lighting throughout
Cost: $200-$500. Savings: $150-$300/year. Payback: 1-2 years. If you have not already converted to LED, do it now. The bulbs pay for themselves in months, and they last 10-25 years.
Upgrade 8: Solar panels
Cost: $20K-$40K installed. Savings: $1,200-$2,500/year (depending on system size and Louisville utility rates). Payback: 8-15 years. The 30% federal tax credit (through 2032) helps a lot. Louisville has decent solar irradiance (4.5 sun hours/day average). Worth it if you are staying in the home 10+ years.
The Louisville utility rebates
LG&E and KU offer rebates for: heat pump water heaters ($300-$750), high-efficiency HVAC ($500-$1,500), smart thermostats ($50-$100), and certain insulation upgrades ($200-$500). Stack these with federal tax credits and the payback periods get much shorter.
How we help
We do energy audits that show you exactly where your home is losing energy. We prioritize upgrades by ROI. We pull all permits. We will tell you which upgrades make financial sense and which do not.
